Frequently Asked Questions About Art Reproductions and Prints

Island Studio - American contemporary artists Easel corner at Island Studio

Our most frequently asked questions are about the technical differences between various types of art prints and reproductions.

In addition to our limited and fluctuating inventory of original paintings, our studio is proud to offer the largest selection of unique tropical images available anywhere.

One reason this is possible is due to the recent modern innovations in the production of prints - or to be precise, reproductions. Now, to be cost effective, we can produce one or two at a time from digital files instead of having to publish hundreds. Every one of our prints is authorized, produced, and approved by us, the artists.

To be fair, and to help people understand these technical differences, we offer below some terms that we hope will explain further:

Art Definitions

GICLEE

Giclay (zee-clay) is French for "sprayed ink". It is the most modern method of art reproduction. An original painting is digitally captured with a high resolution camera called a "Phase One" and then transferred to a computer with special color management software. Then a very large inkjet printer sprays the UV stable, pigmented inks on the artist's choice of media (in our case, traditional, stretched canvas). The resulting continuous tone, intense color is unparalleled.

ORIGINAL PAINTING

This is the original artist's handmade interpretation as a "one of" work of art. In Shari Erickson's case, her original paintings are oil paint on canvas or panels. D.K. Gifford works with acrylic formulas on portrait grade stretched canvas.

ORIGINAL PRINT OR SERIGRAPH

This is a genuine, traditional print created by the artist, by hand, using a classic stencil process.

LITHOGRAPHIC REPRODUCTIONS

Not a handmade traditional lithograph print. Also called Photomechanical reproduction or Photo-Lithography. The original art is photographed, separated into 4 colors, and printed on paper by an offset lithography machine press. Examined closely you can see the tiny dot patterns of the four colors.

POLYCHROME PRINT

The subject is digitally captured, tweaked in the computer, then chemically printed on emulsion enhanced paper. The continuous tone color is saturated and accurate.

OPEN EDITION PRINT

Prints and reproductions are published either as a limited edition of a pre-set quantity, or, an open edition with no predetermined number. Our studio prefers not to limit our possibilities... at present, we've never produced or sold more than a few hundred of any one particular image, but the main reason we don't limit editions is so we can accomodate our collectors' requests for custom sizes and applications.
